about

In Double Happiness, Cerrone’s use of field recordings from his time in Umbria, Italy gives the past literal presence. Rainstorms, church bells, train stations, and the Italian countryside resound in each of five movements that shape a self in transit. The title is that of a collection of short stories by the composer’s friend, the author and Brown professor Mary-Beth Hughes, whose first story, “Pelican Song,” is suffused with a certain melancholy that guided Cerrone’s approach to Double Happiness. (As the Chinese symbol for marriage, the title is also a retroactive reference to Cerrone’s wedding this past year to his partner, the writer Carrie Sun, who is of Chinese descent.)

Double Happiness spins a web of moods from a handful of notes and motifs. In the first interlude, the vibraphone itself mimics a field recording, playing Cerrone’s transcription of the sound of church bells.
