The album finds the composer in transit once more with Hoyt-Schermerhorn for solo piano, inspired by a subway stop where Cerrone has spent many a night of his commute. Vestiges of Cerrone’s initial intention for the piece to be quasi-improvised are reflected in the score’s appearance: a series of resonant clusters absent bar lines or time signatures, guided by markings for dynamic, tempo, and duration. Though the work’s hesitant opening seems to get its bearings, Cerrone proves that the familiar can be fickle. The last section commences with the sound of tinkling fragments, like lost keys agitating to be found: Cerrone’s live electronics, jostling through the piano’s reverie until the end. We’re on the road more traveled by, but we shiver nonetheless.
